Inside Hörmann Burgettstown: Five Decades of High-Performance Door Innovation
Welcome to the fifth stop in our Focus on Factories series: Hörmann's Burgettstown, PA facility. Like Puyallup and Montgomery, this factory has a story spanning decades — from a scrappy startup to a world-class manufacturing operation. Here's the timeline, the products, and what happens on the floor today.
A Rich History Rooted in Europe
It started in 1979, when Dutch manufacturer, Flexion BV, launched Flexion, Inc. in Pittsburgh with four employees and betting that American loading docks needed the impact-resistant door technology already proving itself in Europe.
The early product lineup included the Flexidoor® flexible impact door and PVC strip doors, built to survive repeated forklift hits. A 1980 acquisition of Weathershield® added dock seals and shelters, signaling Flexion's ambition to become a full-line dock equipment supplier.
The '80s brought speed. As warehouses sped up, slow doors meant wasted energy and idle docks, so Flexion launched the RDA high-speed roll-up door and the Flexidoor® FDA-E/FDA-P automatic folding doors, among the first high-speed options for American manufacturing facilities and warehouses. In 1985, a Canadian-designed dock leveler line, Flexidock®, rounded out the portfolio.
What set Flexion apart wasn't just products, it was building custom "specials" when off-the-shelf wouldn't cut it. Their reputation for providing solutions for challenging applications paid off in 1989 with the Speed-Master® Series: a springless, direct-drive high-speed door that became a category leader almost overnight.
When the company came under new ownership in 1993, it brought a new name (Flexon, Inc.) and a new home in Leetsdale, PA. By the late '90s, Flexon turned to a different problem — keeping pests out of food-grade and pharmaceutical docks — with the Screen-Master®, the industry's first Insect Control Barrier door.
Through the 2000s, Flexon grew on the strength of the Speed-Master® line, impact doors, strip doors, and Insect Control Barriers — with custom "specials" still its calling card.
Joining Hörmann & A Decade of Growth
Hörmann acquired Flexon in September 2007, and the company became Hörmann Flexon LLC. Manufacturing stayed in Leetsdale, but the door models standards shifted from a specials job shop to Hörmann's proven manufacturing philosophy with the quick introduction of the Speed-Commander™ and Speed-Guardian™ lines.
Five years later, in 2012, Hörmann announced plans for a move from Leetsdale to Starpointe Business Park in Burgettstown. In 2013, operations moved to a new 68,000-sq.-ft. facility there, investing in automated tube fabrication, automated fabric cutting, and material handling systems, with assembly areas built on lean manufacturing principles from the ground up. The plant maintained record shipping levels through the transition from Leetsdale to Burgettstown, even as capacity constraints started to show on the Speed-Commander™ and Speed-Guardian™ lines. Hörmann responded to this demand in 2014 with targeted investments that included a high-speed hot-air welding machine for Speed-Commander™ fabric panels and a CNC machining center for Speed-Guardian™ sectional panels, which pushed manufacturing innovations to the next level.
The facility's product scope expanded significantly between 2015 and 2016 with the introduction of the Steel Ranger™. The Steel Ranger™ 9000L launched in June 2016, marking Burgettstown's entry into the rolling steel door market. Product development continued at a steady clip over the next several years: the SM1600XL and SG4000ULP in 2016, the SG5000 replacing the SG4000 in 2017, the SC1500C SEL and SR9500LS in 2020, and the SG5040 TurboLux in 2024.
2017 brought Burgettstown's most significant physical transformation — a manufacturing footprint expansion from 68,000 to 288,000 square feet. The expansion included equipment upgrades the likes of an internal sheet metal line with fiber laser cutting, CNC press brake, and automated material handling; a dedicated Steel Ranger™ fabrication and assembly line with vertical slat/track storage, a custom CNC machining center, and a purpose-built panel punching and assembly area for Steel Ranger™ and Speed-Commander™ 1500 Compact production; and an in-house windload testing fixture capable of static and dynamic windload and water intrusion testing.
In 2023, Hörmann shifted its loading technology and impact door production to a new manufacturing center in Imperial, PA, drawing on the skilled workforce and manufacturing expertise built up in Burgettstown. Now, in 2026, the facility is positioning for its next phase of growth that currently includes offsite storage, which frees up floor space for raw materials, finished goods, and inventory, opening the door to a future paint line and another step toward vertical integration.
Burgettstown Support Departments
Administration & Support — Burgettstown houses administration, inside sales, customer service, engineering, and technical support for the high-performance door lines.
Technical & Installation Training — Hands-on mechanical and electrical installation training runs year-round at our on-site training compound, in small class sizes. Dealers can register online. On-site training is also available — a Hörmann technician comes to you.
Technical Support — Live phone and email support, 24/7/365, plus the Hörmann Service Support App (App Store and Google Play) for help on the go.

Rigid Models
Speed-Guardian™ Series
The basis for all Speed-Guardian™ Series models is the Speed-Guardian™ 5000 C U 42 — "C" for coiling operation, "U 42" for 42 mm urethane panels — available with track designs from low-profile (LP) to low-headroom (LH). Eight models make up the Series; the SG 5040 TurboLux rounds out the rigid door category with different panel materials and components as compared to the other Speed-Guardian™ models.

Steel Ranger™ Series
The Steel Ranger™ Series is a modern alternative to outdated rolling steel doors in high-cycle locations. Both high-speed and low-speed models are springless and direct-drive, keeping maintenance and total cost of ownership low. The Steel Ranger™ 9000 L Elite is built for high-cycle, high-speed use at 45 in/sec; the Steel Ranger™ 9500 LS opens at 8 in/sec, ideal for daily high-cycle use without the need for high speed. Compact guide tracks need just 4" of side room, fitting even the tightest openings.
