This isn’t a story of acquisition and consolidation. It’s about preserving specialized knowledge while investing in next-generation capabilities — with eight Northwest Door veterans still on the floor today, now equipped with some of the most advanced manufacturing technology in the industry from Hörmann’s vast engineering expertise.
From Humble Beginnings to a Western Powerhouse
Crawford Door to Northwest Door: A Legacy Forged in 1946
Crawford Door opened its doors in 1946. In 1966, the DeWitt family purchased the company and rebranded it Northwest Door — starting with just four employees: Steve DeWitt, his wife Jenny, and his father Paul. Four years later, in 1970, the company began manufacturing wood doors, quickly earning a reputation for quality craftsmanship rooted in one of the country’s premier lumber-producing regions.
Under the "Yes We Can!" mission statement, leadership grew the company steadily through uncertain markets, prioritizing product quality over being first to market. R&D was focused on meaningful improvement — balancing existing strengths with carefully developed new products.
By 2012: A Full-Scale Regional Brand
By 2012, Northwest Door had grown to 185 employees, manufacturing a full range of residential and commercial garage doors across 25 product families — in wood, steel, and aluminum. The company operated six distribution centers and served a network of more than 1,000 Western U.S. dealers.
Northwest Door was the first manufacturer in the industry to offer website development for their dealers, and introduced the industry’s first tablet app for the garage door retrofit market — enabling dealers to configure thousands of door designs and visualize them on a homeowner’s garage in real time.
The Hörmann Era: Global Scale, Local Excellence (2015–Present)
The Hörmann Group acquired Northwest Door in 2015, expanding its North American sectional door presence into the West Coast to complement its 2006 acquisition of GADCO in Montgomery, Illinois. From 2015 to 2025, the Puyallup team grew from around 70 to approximately 250 employees — including production staff, outside sales support, and personnel from 9 regional sales centers.
Hörmann operates out of the original Northwest Door facility: a 288,000 sq. ft. building located just south of SR 512, near Canyon Road in Puyallup, WA. In 2025, a new storage complex totaling approximately 40,000 square feet was added to accommodate expanding material and supply needs.
The Puyallup facility offers a remarkable view of Mt. Rainier directly from the front entrance and parking lot — a daily reminder of the Pacific Northwest home this factory proudly serves.
Nine Sales Centers Across the Western Territory
As of February 2026, nine sales centers support distribution of sectional commercial and residential garage doors manufactured in Puyallup and Hörmann’s other sectional door factories. Sales centers serve as dealer pickup hubs and product demonstration locations for prospects and customers.
Locations include: Colorado, Arizona, Utah, California, Idaho, Oregon, and three in Washington.

The Overlay Shop: Artisan Custom Doors
Puyallup’s custom door shop — formerly known as the “Wood Shop” — is where the award-winning Clima Elite 5800 is crafted. This carriage house model features a traditional wood composite overlay applied to a modern polyurethane panel. Every door that leaves the shop receives artisan-level attention, making it one of the most distinctive offerings in the Hörmann North American lineup.

Every summer, Puyallup hosts its beloved "Hot Rods and Hot Dogs" event, where employees who own custom and vintage cars show off their wheels.
