From the Midwest to North America: Hörmann's Roots in the US
A Legacy Built on Innovation
Hörmann's North American story begins in Montgomery, Illinois — but the foundation was laid decades earlier by General American Door Company (GADCO).
Founded in 1961 as General Aluminum Company, GADCO spent more than 40 years earning a reputation for quick turnarounds, innovative products, and customer-first service. What started as a residential aluminum siding operation grew into a garage door industry leader, with over 175,000 square feet of production capability and a distribution network spanning the eastern half of the United States.
Four Decades of Firsts
GADCO's track record of product innovation set it apart. In 1974, the company invented and patented one of the garage door industry's first true breakthrough products — the Therm-O-Air, featuring high-density polyethylene in an all-aluminum framework. Over the following decades, GADCO continued introducing firsts: the Liberty® steel door in 1979, the world's first raised-panel high-density polyethylene door in 1990, and a string of energy-efficient, design-forward products through the early 2000s.
Hörmann Carries the Legacy Forward
In 2006, the Hörmann Group acquired GADCO and continued operations in Montgomery, Illinois — inheriting not just a facility, but a culture of craftsmanship and customer commitment that aligned naturally with Hörmann's own values. It was the beginning of a new chapter, built on a very strong foundation.
Joe Kee, GADCO President beginning in 1988, attributed the company's 40-year success to its attention to customer service through quick responses to calls, an extensive distribution network, innovative products, and always striving for trouble-free service.
FingerGuard™ Door Manufacturing – All Day, Every Day
Step onto the Montgomery production floor and you'll notice something rare: focus. This facility is Hörmann North America's dedicated headquarters for pinch-resistant, FingerGuard™ door manufacturing — and nothing else. Every door that rolls off this line is built pinch-resistant, which means customization isn't a special request here. It's the default.
Every tongue-and-groove model in our lineup has a FingerGuard™ counterpart. Look for "Safe" in the model name, and you've found it.
Experience runs deep at Montgomery, too. Seventeen employees have called this campus home for more than 20 years — a track record that puts Hörmann Montgomery in the running for one of the most experienced sectional garage door facilities in North America.

Hörmann Montgomery operates five main product lines, each producing FingerGuard™ models. FingerGuard™ pinch-resistant sections are constructed using deep tongue-and-groove joints and hinges that provide an air-tight seal and prevent finger injuries inside and outside:

Montgomery produces five residential garage door models at a rate of hundreds of doors per week, across four categories:

More than 60 years after GADCO's first patent, Montgomery is still doing what it's always done — building doors that hold up. The plant's five production lines and five residential models carry forward the same standard Joe Kee described decades ago: quick response, consistent quality, and products that perform.
That's the through-line across every Hörmann facility, and Montgomery is where it started.
Located in the country's heartland, the Montgomery facility also houses the Chicagoland Sales Center, serving dealers across the greater Chicago area. Housed in the same building as manufacturing, it's one of Hörmann's seven FlexLine™ Light Manufacturing Services locations — giving dealers on-site access to more inventory and key local customizations, including custom-cut springs, glazed door sections, and stock door sections, so they can respond quickly to jobsite needs.
