HUSA062025 - Safe, Smart, and Strong: Specifying Loading Technologies for Industrial Efficiency
Provider: Hörmann
Length: 1 Hour
Credits: 1 AIA LU | HSW
LU / HSW: Yes
Cost: FREE
Description
This course equips architects with foundational knowledge to specify dock levelers and related safety systems that protect occupants, reduce energy loss, and ensure structural and operational durability. Through the lens of health, safety, and welfare (HSW), participants will examine real-world challenges and learn how effective dock design mitigates injury risks, improves thermal performance, and contributes to sustainable building operation.
Prerequisite Knowledge
None. No advance preparation required.
HSW Justification
This course qualifies for HSW credit because it directly supports the protection of public health, building occupant safety, and welfare through informed specification of dock systems. Topics address hazard mitigation (e.g., fall prevention, vehicle restraint failures), energy conservation through dock seals and insulation, and long-term durability of structures. Attendees will gain knowledge critical to reducing injury risk, preserving thermal integrity, and ensuring code-compliant access to high-traffic service areas.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this course, the design professional will be able to:
- Identify the primary categories of dock levelers and safety accessories and explain their functions in loading dock environments.
- Assess common safety hazards at loading docks and how equipment design mitigates risks to workers and facility occupants.
- Analyze the impact of dock systems on thermal efficiency, building durability, and operational resilience.
- Develop specification strategies for dock equipment that comply with code, support HSW priorities, and align with architectural documentation.
Method of Delivery
The course is offered to design professionals in a lunch and learn setting. The course is presented in PowerPoint.
