Pinch-Resistant Residential Garage Doors are a Hörmann Tradition

As a family-owned business since its founding in 1935, quality and safety have always been at the forefront of the company’s philosophy, so it makes sense that for Hörmann today, pinch-resistant garage doors are the standard product that is sold throughout Europe. While pinch-resistant (or deep tongue and groove) products are a rare find in North America’s sectional garage door arena, Hörmann North America is proud to maintain the company tradition by offering six pinch-resistant residential products and four pinch-resistant commercial models.

Use of tongue-and-groove joints date back thousands of years. Used by Egyptians and Chinese woodworkers in flooring and cabinetry, and for shipbuilding and construction of timber-framed buildings in Medieval Europe, their interlocking functionality made it possible to create connected surfaces that resisted moisture and movement.

Fast forward to the 1930s-1950s when sectional garage doors became more common in residential construction, manufacturers began engineering garage doors (primarily wooden) with horizontal tongue-and-groove section joints. The joints helped align the panels, block air and water infiltration, and provided a smooth operation.  From the 1960s and 1980s, aluminum and steel doors were introduced, and manufacturers cloned the tongue-and-groove concept using roll-formed metal components; some doors included insulating weatherstripping in the joint as well.

Today, tongue-and-groove section joints remain a standard in many insulated and non-insulated sectional garage doors. Variations may include thermal breaks for prevention of air infiltration between the sections as well as flexible weather seals in the joint space.

Pinch-resistant panels are modified tongue and groove profiles that were introduced to improve safety and prevent finger injuries. On pinch-resistant panels, the tongue is higher and sharper as compared to a conventional tongue on a tongue-and-groove panel. The added tongue height makes it so that when the door is opening or closing, there is always a portion of the tongue contacting the groove above it, so it is impossible to catch fingers between the sections. 

Pinch-Resistant Residential

Hörmann offers six residential garage door models with pinch-resistant panels. The selection of pinch-resistant products includes three traditional, two carriage style, and one contemporary model – so if the added safety of pinch resistance is a priority, there are several products to choose from. 

Hörmann’s uniquely designed FingerGuard™ pinch-resistant section joints prevent fingers from getting caught between the door sections, which supports safety and reduces the risk of injuries. Hörmann’s pinch-resistant products overall include better warranties on the hardware as compared to Hörmann tongue and groove models. Note that all pinch-resistant models have Hörmann’s FingerGuard™ section joints and hinges that prevent finger injuries inside and out, reduce air infiltration, and provide a weather-tight seal, while ‘between-section weather seals’ are factory-installed for maximum protection from the elements. 

Traditional Models

Pro Safe 2100: The Pro Safe 2100 is a “Value” model that offers a wide variety of design options without going over budget. It is maintenance-free with 2” thick panels constructed of 25-gauge galvanized and finish-painted steel, with an easy-to-clean woodgrain texture. Four panel designs in twelve color options and twenty-two window designs are available.  For greater energy savings, polystyrene insulation with a vinyl back cover is available and provides an R-Value of 7.4. The warranty is 3 years on hardware, 3 years on springs, and Lifetime on sections.

Therma Safe 3200: The Therma Safe 3200 is classified as a “Better” choice in an affordable, insulated garage door and is also maintenance-free, with two” thick sections constructed of a steel front and back with insulating polystyrene core for an R-10.5 thermal rating and quiet operation. It is available in six choices of well-defined panel embossments with easy-to-clean woodgrain texture, galvanized and finish-painted steel – in 12 diverse colors, and an assortment of 22 window designs. The warranty is 4 years on hardware, 3 years on springs, and Lifetime on sections.

Therma Safe 3200 (Extreme Package): The Therma Safe 3200 Extreme comes with all the same panels design qualities and color options.  The Extreme Package includes more substantial Package hardware and springs that each come with a Limited Lifetime Warranty.

Carriage Style Models

Style Safe 5200: The Style Safe 5200 combines the looks of a carriage house style door with all the benefits of a modern steel garage door.  Six well-defined panel inlay designs with easy-to-clean Rainslope™ woodgrain texture are available, and all designs come with a tough steel front and back construction and insulating polyurethane core. The standard color is white, and optional colors are available with Hörmann’s Galaxy Paint System.

Deco Safe 5250:  The Deco Safe 5250 is available in four recessed panel inlay designs with easy-to-clean Rainslope™ woodgrain texture. 2” thick sections are constructed of a galvanized and finish-painted steel front and back with an insulating polyurethane core, which provides an R-6.9 thermal rating. Standard colors are white and sandstone, and optional colors are available through Hörmann’s custom color Galaxy Paint System.

Contemporary Models

Classic Safe 7200: The Classic Safe 7200 offers the best in contemporary looks while maximizing natural light in any garage or outdoor living space.  It is constructed with a 1¾” thick, completely clear panel made of high-quality glazing frames in rust-proof anodized aluminum.  For added thermal performance, optional polyurethane-insulated steel sections are available, as are insulated windows. Choose from four standard colors, or for those who dream big, find your ideal color in our unlimited spectrum Galaxy Paint System. 

Pinch-Resistant Commercial

Even with tongue and groove panels a common choice for commercial sectional products, Hörmann still offers four of its fifteen commercial sectional models with pinch-resistant panels. Just like the residential door models, on three select commercial sectional models, Hörmann includes uniquely designed FingerGuard™ pinch-resistant section joints that prevent fingers from getting caught between the door sections. This supports safety and reduces the risk of injuries that may result in workers’ compensation claims.

Pinch-resistant choices are available from each of the four commercial door designs: urethane, sandwich, full-view, and pan. The three pinch-resistant commercial models are:

425U (Urethane)

With a 1-3/4” thick panel and insulation value of R-16.1, the 425U is a solid choice for a polyurethane - insulated commercial sectional door. It is available in two panel styles and three window designs. The standard color is white, but for custom colors, semi-custom colors are available. Precise custom colors are available with Hörmann’s Galaxy Paint System. The Warranty is: Door: 10yr / Hardware: 1yr / Springs: 1yr.

325S/324S (Sandwich)

Insulation is standard on the 325S standard-duty (25 gauge steel) and the 324S heavy-duty (24 gauge steel) commercial steel sandwich doors. 

The 2” thick door panel has an HCFC-free polystyrene core an R-value of 8.9 and is available in white, brown, sandstone, or industrial grey. Any custom color is available through Hörmann’s Galaxy Paint System. The Warranty is:  Door: 10yr / Hardware: 1yr / Springs: 1yr.

225P/224P (Pan)

Both the 225P standard-duty (25 gauge steel) and 224P heavy-duty (24 gauge steel) commercial steel pan doors have a 2” thick panel, and with optional insulation, an R-7.4 insulation value. They are available with three window designs and nine glass options. Both models come in White, Sandstone, and Brown. The 225P is also available in grey. The Warranty is: Door: 10yr / Hardware: 1yr / Springs: 1yr.
